Mr. Chamberlain replied on 25/2/02 that if the Tran

Company cane to an arrangement with the Telephone Company he

would not require the draft Ordinance to be amended so as to

provide express protection to the Telephone Company's system

or to wires and lines generally(other than those now or hereafter

constructed or worked by the Government and the Cable Companies)"

On 11th, Marsh,1902, the Telephone Company reported

to the Colonial Offise that they had arranged terms with the

Tram Company: what those terms were is not recorded.

On 14th, March 1902,Mr. Chamberlain informed the Trac-

99902 way Company's representatives that "The Acting Governor will be

instructed by the outgoing mail to amend the draft ordinanes

so as to secure for all existing or future Telegraph or

telephone lines belonging to Government Departments the sare

protection which is conferred by section 21 on the lines of the

Cable Companies and to insert a clause containing provisions

similar to those of section 81 of the Imperial Electric

Lighting Aot of 1899", and on the same day Mr. Chamberlain wrote

to the Governor of Hongkong the attached letter.
